Obesity and the NHS

Almost two-thirds (63%) of adults in England are overweight or living with obesity – and 1 in 3 children leave primary school overweight or obese. The government has released a new obesity strategy encouraging people to lose weight to tackle coronavirus and protect the NHS.

What is CPD:

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and is the term used to describe the learning activities professionals engage in to develop and enhance their abilities.

What will the training include?

People attending will gain a greater understanding of working with obesity and how this can be applied to working with clients. Counsellors can develop confidence when working with clients who are obese and be able to promote wellbeing, increase positive coping skills and set manageable goals which promote change.

Training will give an overview of:

  • Working therapeutically with people who would like to lose weight

  • Physical and mental health risks of being overweight

  • Exploring the factors which can lead to obesity

  • Why some clients resist change or fall back into previous habits

  • Additional reading resources

Feedback from previous training

“It was informative and I learned a lot through the discussions and reflecting on my own biases. It was quite thought-provoking. It was pitched at the right level (not patronising).  Christine included lots of real-life examples, which made it even more interesting”.

“I did not have a basic understanding of the concepts of working with obesity at the start of the session but by the end, I felt much more confident and motivated to learn more about it. I liked that we were asked for our ideas like the causes as I also learnt from the other participants as well. I valued the personal experiences that Christine shared and the experiences she talked about in her former role as this contributed to my understanding. The CPD exceeded my expectations as it helped me to understand the journey of working with obesity rather than focusing on just one area”.

“This training provided a good basic introduction to disordered eating. I found it to be relevant to my practice and was pitched at the right level for an introductory course. I liked the way the training was structured – seeking feedback from the attendees before the material was discussed in more detail. There was plenty of time for all attendees to contribute and the relaxed format provided a comfortable space where attendees felt encouraged to participate”.
